Global warming

Global warming is an issue that i have always felt held an importance in the world today. Each second that we just talk about fixing the issues of global warming we get that much closer to destroying our planet, that mush closer to contributing to the extinction of entire habitats, because global climate doesn't just affect your summer vacations but the livelihood of thousands to millions of animals, plant life, resources that we use for our daily lives. We must lend a voice to those who cannot speak, but with that voice must come action. Global warming is an issue that has gotten out of hand, we should have thought of the ramifications to our actions, because those who are responsible are countries that industrialized, create massive rates of pollution , car owners, gas companies, and anyone who does not try to do anything about this issue. The difference with global warming is the fact that it is an issue that affects every individual in the world, every continent, every country , every nation, it is not something that we can just blame on the other guy. We are all inhabitants of this planet, no matter what language we speak, color we are, the way we live our life it is all irrelevant to the issue at hand, Global warming is exactly that a global issue, we must lend a hand and join to together to create not only a better planet, a better world , a better people. Help us help the world, help it become a better place, a better planet, a gem in the crown of the universe. This is why the united nation was created so we can join together to unravel the travesties of this world, and find what lies beneath and in some way shape or form, whether it takes 10 years or 10 months, make a change for the better in this world. Make human stand for humanity again, for the sake of all man kind, we must always find each other in issues like this.

Global warming is something that we must not ignore because once we are gone the next generation must know what direction to follow. What path and example to take, i have always been passionate about this issue, and feel that we should take more assertive action towards actually making difference. Today and tomorrow are not that far away, so lets start the change, and when i say all of us i mean everyone that can make a change, an impact to be reckon with because united we are force beyond all reason to be reckoned with, divided we have no bond no force. For the sake of all the polar bears dying because their land, the polar ice caps are melting and they have no more late to migrate too, all due to global warming. If not for the polar bear do it for the penguins, for the whales, for the coral reefs, do it for every species on this planet that has no power! You have the power, the power to make a change so make a change, join the endangered species act petition, reduce your own carbon foot print, urge nation to change the amount of pollution they cause, create a voice. That is what i did with my MUN experience, i gave a voice to those who couldn't speak, and lend an ear to those people who would never listen. Make a change because if i can create peace, find a solution to problems in this world, then why can't you. I was just a kid when i started, so really anyone can change the worlds, just do it one step at a time and remember you are not the only ones global warming affects. But you are the ones who can take a piece of the responsibility and make a change. Live not for today, but for the hope of tomorrow.

Model United Nations has provided me with an abundance of information that i can carry into many field of work, i have used the very same insight and ideals that i gained from debating issues into analyzing economics, access to hospitals, and the endless cycle that we follow in America. These are not issues that only pertain to Americans, but also have to do with many individuals, we look at these issues and realize that there was more that had to be done. With Model United Nations i learned that something can be done.

These are articles that i had to analyze and connect to the united states today.

“Where’s the bank bailout money?”
updated 8:02 a.m. EST, Tue December 23, 2008

The most well know banks in America, had to bailed out, using federal funds. The real question of the article is where the money is going. For the fact that most of the banks involved like Citigroup, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, and Wells Fargo have stated they cannot let out sufficient information because they are still waiting on the results of their fourth quarter. Yet it is also focusing on the “stimulation of our economy”, but the results are not being seen. It is been brought to question the amount of freedom these companies are given with the federal funds. So they question why the people weren’t responsible for the crisis on Wall Street brought to court. Overall it seems that many financial planners believe congress needs to hold more control and have more restriction on the money they give to the banks. In one hand the banks are trying to ensure the value of their customer’s loans, while the government’s wants stabilize the economy.
The stabilization and ground work of our economy can truly be connected to the state of our banks today. The institution of the first national bank was meant as a structure for the regulation of federal funds, taxes, and other means of cash flow. But it was anything but structured; it was completely disorganized, like the bailout money that was given to the banks today. The money was given with no rules or regulations to follow, therefore where the money went was all left in the hands of the bank. Much like the people who ran the first national bank, it was only the wealthy that had the means to be a part of it, so they maintain most of the control. It is very similar to the way the banks are using the federal resources to maintain the value of their most important loans. Instead of doing what they set out to do, stabilize the economy, their doing what they think is right not necessarily for the nation, but for their customers. Like the first national bank the banks today represent a flawed system that is not working towards the stabilization of the government’s economy. The national bank and the bailout plan are two ideas still developing, with good intentions to help the nation’s economy as a whole.

“Hospitals Hit Hard By Recession”
Monday, December 29, 2008 –updated: 6:43 am PST December 29, 2008

The hospitals all around the country, especially in rural areas are suffering with the recession. It has to do with their access to supplies, workers and patients. Some hospitals have had to put a “freeze” on hiring and salaries, in places like Cleveland clinic in Ohio. They have had to find any means to make cuts in spending, especially when it comes to their own employees. Many hospitals have had to borrow more while losing investments and it has not been helped by the employment rate, that has plummeted, which makes the amount of patients who can actually pay their bills dwindle with time. Many investors are not finding the hope in financing these hospitals because their status, which many have changed from “stable” to ‘negative”. All do to the recession, and the rate of people who are not capable of paying their bills.
The article in question makes a deep connection to the tariffs placed on the south after the war, it created great difficulty and tension between the north and the south. The same has happened with investors and hospital officials, they are so dependent on the economy to maintain their business that they are suffering by the circumstance in which are economy is in. They have lost their ability to hire as many doctors and nurses, therefore leading to a depletion in healthcare, and the well being of the American common people because this is mainly affecting rural areas right now. This can relate to the south because they had lost their ability to grow as many crops as they could, since they depend on foreign resources to grow their goods. In turn the economy was affecting the south, which was considered the rural; common people, and therefore their short comings can also affect many other Americans because they are such a large group and entity. This is why both of these events had to be discussed and dealt with because both have the significance of affecting a larger group of people, and creating great devastation for the United States.

Gilded Age: Making a comeback?

updated 4:23 p.m. EST, Sun December 28, 2008
“Panel investigating Blagojevich won't subpoena Obama advisers” is a through article contemplating whether or not these government representatives should be subpoena. It gives the frame work of Rob Blagojevich’s actions, and how he attempted to sell Barack Obama’s senate seat. This is completely illegal, and that was why he was brought in with the charge of “Facing federal corruption charges”, that was not the only thing he tried to do. There was not only Blagojevich but many other government representatives that were brought to question, concerning the situation and how others may be doing the same. It represents a flaw in our government that has yet to be dealt with, and can have a greater impact on the people. It is the main focus of the government because they do not know whether just to charge Blagojevich or others as well who may have been involve. It represented how Blagojevich was trying to gain, while playing with the notion of our government representatives, which could have had serious consequences on the state of our government.

Rod Blagojevich is only showing the corruption within our government, and how the system has its own flaws. That even today government officials are trying to sell a senate seat, for a quick "buck". As if the people could not be any more concern with their government, and with the new found hope of president Barrack Obama, we see a startling twist, and reversion to a time of chaos and confusion. Where politicians paid their way into senate seats, and won the people over with their conniving charm. The gilded age is the very time in question, where people like Tweed, flourished in the trickery of it all. There did their deals in secrecy, so that they may get the most benefit. But just when we thought those days were gone, we see Blagojevich trying to sell a senate seat, but doing it without remorse or embarrassment. But the real question is why is it only being brought to the people’s and governments attention now? When there have been many witnesses which say it has been going on for some time. It is much like the gilded age of America because everything seemed to be sugar coated until the truth was revealed. Until the government felt they had enough reason to go in and take action. The very charge was “Facing federal corruption charges”, which is what our government once was, corrupt. The very definition of corruption is dishonesty for personal gain; politicians during the gilded age only cared about the money. The elections were controlled by people like Tweed, who were involved in the very affairs of the people. And this is what our government was in danger of having one person manipulate who our government representatives will be. For the fact that would mean the people will have no voice and therefore the extinction of our democracy. The two points in American history, both now and in the late 19th century, represent the evolution and progression of our government. Where they no longer condone political corruption, for they are actions that affect all the people of the United States.

philly resolution

This resolution dealt with the issue of biodiversity, basically handling all aspects that have to do with nature, as well as addressing the issues of dealing with biodiversity today for the sack of tomorrow. We had discussions on how exactly we would assist the needs of many nations as well as how we would assist our own needs.

Opening Speech

Thank you honorable chair and fellow delegates,

The Marshall Islands believes that this issue of climate change is of paramount importance to the well being of any nation, it affects not only the country geographically but economically as well. The reliance that many countries have on their natural resources is one of the factors that affect this issue because their natural resources provide for the people as well as a basis for the state of our economy. The environmental ramifications are that of gargantuan proportions with the issue of climate change, it has caused the rise of sea levels, damaging of coral reefs, and having an impact on our marine life. Climate change is not an issue that only affects our country but every country in the world. It is dealing with the changes in temperature, sea levels, and even whole habits as a result of these changes. These are only a few reasons why we must not ignore or brush off the topic of climate control, we must do something now before the damage that has been done, becomes irreversible.

position papers

Committee: United Nations Climate Control Conference
Topic: The road to Copenhagen
Country: Marshall Islands
Delegate: Soraida Medina, Sarah Delvin
School: George Washington High School of International Business and Finance

The changing environment is an issue we cannot ignore; it is something that affects every aspect of our lives. As Norbert Wiener once said “We have modified our environment so radically that we must now modify ourselves to exist in this new environment.” representing the extent to which we have changed the face of our planet. We have as people, as a united community, changed the immaculate beauty that we once admired as a whole. This is why the Republic of the Marshall Islands, firmly stands on stopping this ongoing issue of our changing planet and we are devoted to finding an effective solution and treating the damage that has already been done.

The issue of climate control has had an impact on our country; it is something that we cannot control as a singular body but as a force when united. The Marshall Islands has been affected by climate control, with our rising sea levels, and temperature changes causing typhoons and other natural disaster within our islands. Global warming has caused are waters and land to heat up, igniting a change in the atmosphere and disturbing our way of life. It has not only impacted our environment, but our people, and our culture.

Through the course of the UN we see that there have been many actions that have attempted to solve the problem of climate control. The Republic of the Marshall Islands has tried to solve this issue, and has truly attested our concern through the signing of agreement like the Kyoto protocol, as well as agreements having to do with biodiversity, law of the sea, wetlands, and many more. The international community has been associated with these projects and we must take these solutions and strengthen them by creating higher expectations and goals so that we may maintain our planet’s atmosphere and not disrupt it any more then we have already done.

The Marshall Islands has been a part of associations like Pacific Islands Climate Change Assistance Programme (PICCAP), South Pacific Sea Level and Climate Monitoring Project (SEAFRAME), and Schools of the Pacific Rainfall Climate Experiment (SPaRCE). These programs are aimed at monitoring the water levels, the state of the coral reefs, and the overall status of the atmosphere. We have implemented these programs in our country to monitor the state of our environment and to attempt to gain some further knowledge as to what can be done. We also gain research from these associations and can try to stop the cycle that human beings have created in the deterioration of our planet.

The republic of the Marshall Islands strongly believes in strengthening the programs that already exist, along with researching to find new ways of life. This will benefit us because we will find new forms of creating systems that are aimed at maintaining and conserving our environment. We believe that we must support organizations like Green Peace that can contribute to the fight against global warming and the organization of new innovative methods of progression.

The Republic of the Marshall Islands strongly believes that mankind is capable of change and progress. In this effort we must work together and create a new form a life for all, not will not all benefit the people but the planet itself.

Committee: United Nations Environment Programme
Topic: Conserving Biodiversity during Industrialization
Country: Pakistan
Delegate: Soraida Medina, Lingordi Rocha

“There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed.” ~Mohandas K. Gandhi. Identifying the suffering the planet endures in the quest for economic gain, in this case industrialization. The very conservation of the natural world is of upmost importance to Pakistan. We believe that the issue of conserving biodiversity is one of grand proportions. It is the very reason that our country suffers in many areas, having to do with pollution and the overall status of our environment. We hope to find that the planets well being comes before our own selfish needs.

Biodiversity has to do with the planets and species within the environment and therefore we must find a long term solution to the problem. The nation of Pakistan believes persevering biodiversity can and will have a positive outcome on the world. It will not only benefit us but many others because we are reducing the amount of species that will go extinct as well as the number of resources used by industries that only cause pollution and turmoil to the natural order of things.

In Pakistan we have shown our concern through the creation of institutions and Ecological Industrial Parks, we have advocated new sources of maintaining the environment as well as created revenue, so that developing nations can find new information on the conservation of our planet. The research gained from the awareness can also benefit the world. The knowledge absorbed can also led to better preservation of the planet, by keeping many endangered species in existence, while growing in these industries, therefore conserving the state of the planet.

Pakistan has advocated this type of behavior by signing the “Marine Life Conservation” resolution, which took into consideration the protecting species while technological advancements are taking place. Pakistan has also worked on programs associated with the United Nations, to preserve our depleting rainforest and landscape. We have also shown this through our dedication to the Pakistan Environmental Protection Act (1997), which are involved with the cleaner production program(CCP), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and many other public and private agencies.

Pakistan strongly encourages strengthening the Kyoto Protocol, so that there will not be as many CO2 emission released into the atmosphere during the industrialization process, and there is control over the substances that are distributed in the atmosphere. Strengthen international conservation agreements emphasize the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), as well as international fisheries law (see section on Marine Conservation). This would help in specifying and serving as a guide to help solve the problems with biodiversity, as well as stimulate change for many nation. As well as set restriction on growing industrial industries, so that we may stop the cycle before it starts, and rewarding those industries that do abide by these ideals with aid, international affairs, any means that pertains to their continual fight against the destruction of our planet.

By working with agencies like Self monitoring and reporting tool (SMART) Pakistan believes that this is an effective way to be non invasive, as well to create a method in which countries are in control of their own resources. It is very important that we consider the many nations that suffer from pollution and deforestation while they are going through the industrialization process, since they do not have the means to obtain the most sophisticated or environmentally friendly machinery. Then referring to NGO’s, and setting up specialized programs would be an effect method to secure and stabilize the state of the environment.

With the intension of preserving biodiversity we must unit in an effort to conserve the natural world, with consideration to growing industries. It is of paramount importance that we consider the monitoring of these industries, to obtain and prevent the issues that coincide with biodiversity and industrialization. It is an impending doom, a forlorn catastrophe that we have the chance to prevent. Let us stop the destruction of our planet, for pure greed and wealth, and give way to a cleansed world of both profit and preservation.

Committee: Special, Political, and Decolonization
Topic: Missile Defense Systems
Country: Benin
Delegates: Soraida Medina, Valerine Andujar

In the Uniting for Peace document it states “To maintain international peace and security, and to that end: to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace.” This document was a foundation on which the United Nations was based upon, and has incessantly tried to reach such a goal. As we have seen through the actions of the cold war that missile defenses have threatened that very peace, by endangered the well being of the world.

The democratic republic of Benin believes that missile defense systems are not the true threat to human kind, but those who yield them are. The purpose of these systems is to ensure the safety of our people against foreign threats. We propose that these systems be monitored and regulated, not being used for criminal acts but for research, or even propose that they be destroyed altogether , putting all those funds and resources to better uses. In this sense promoting world peace and security, this would not cause concern of being annihilated.

“In February 2006, the Government of Benin signed a 5-year $308 million Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC) to increase investment and private sector activity in Benin.” This shows how we are trying to grow and be far more involved in international affairs. “Much of the scientific and technical research conducted in Benin is directed toward agriculture”, going towards what is necessary for the survival of our people, it is in a peaceful way of focusing our energy. In Benin we do not even hold these missile systems, much like many other underdeveloped countries, in these types of regions.

The sole purpose of this meeting is to discuss whether missile systems are a threat or merely percussion. Despite the controversial issues that come with this topic, missile defense systems have provided a productive way to insure the safety of a nation, as well as stimulated technological advancements. It has helped the progress in other fields such as medicine, technology, agriculture, and numerous fashions on how to extend and life, and has elevated the quality of life that people have an ability to live by in the modern world.

But never the less the very technology that has provided us with these missiles, to protect and serve our rights as sovereign countries, has also been the cause of countless deaths and destruction of many lives, and the course of history. As we saw in the booming of Pearl Harbor or Hiroshima, these weapons only cause more incentive to be afraid for your life. The very idea that you are not safe in your own country, contradicts the sole purpose of these weapons. So in all if they were not in existence than all the nations of the world could unit, and truly hope to have a peaceful relationship. Not one based on “who has the bigger guns”.

In the creation of the United Nations they search for a way to conserve the fate of the world, in these acts protecting all who inhabit it. In the creation of all of mans innovations, and creation of our species strength, we developed Missile defense systems which threaten our very fate on this planet. Shown throughout history that these mass weapons do not provide a solution of peace, but on of war. This is why we need to use the technology gained from the creation of these systems to better use. Like medicine, agriculture, and the pursuit of global peace, harmony, and prosperity. So that we may attempt to fulfill the goals the UN had intended in their ventures on correcting the errors of this world. Weapons only create death and destruction, not Peace and prosperity.

What model un is to me

The sole purpose of adventure and opportunity is what I feel model United Nations brings into my life. It is a world and simulation, of how to resolve the many global problems, which take place in this world, with peace and dignity. It is an aspect of my life which has helped me become much more responsible, and well rounded as a person. I no longer see the world as the things that surround me, but a vast sea of possibilities and opportunities. All we have to do as people is give that same perception, that anything is possible, to others in the world who are not as fortunate as I and many others have been.
I bring with me, into every conference that I attend, is the ability to learn and educate others on the many different perspectives, on which an issue entails. I have with me a great passion for solving global issues, and approach every issue with great respect and determination, for I truly hope that one day the world and the people within it learn to co-exist, in peace. For man are his own maker and destroyer. For nature is our creature and man is our destroyer, without people trying to resolve the immensity of quandaries in the world, we cannot evolve as human beings. We simply are life at a stalemate, where things only remain the same because people are too afraid of change. But the truth is our world truly needs a dramatic change, so that we may all live within peaceful and prosperous nations.
The Model United Nations teaches great team and life building experiences. It is time where I will be discussing very serious predicaments in the world, and in retrospect not act as a child but as a young adult. I have the ability to grow and learn about many other pieces, of this world that we live in. It is a building block to prepare me for the college life, and set me on the path to achieving whatever problem comes before me. I will honestly learn how to look at things from an analytical sense, and find the many possibilities that it has, not just looking at the surface of things. For it took people centuries to realize, what you see is not always what you get! Once you have the opportunity to unravel and really dig into the issues in which we face in this world, the very ideas consumes your very being. Those experiences are the very thing in which you are granting to me and my class mates. The ability to present our very ideals, and opinions of what to do concerning the actuality of what these nation might do.
Model United Nations is an experience that not everyone gets to experience but once you do, it changes your true perspective of things. I believe that I could represent my school and the whole model United Nations cooperation, with great dignity and pride. It would be my pleasure to tackle world issues with people just as passionate and driven to find a solution, not just people from the state of New York but many other places as well. The world is too big to spend life within the constraints of one place.

My model united nations experience

Being a part of the model United Nations has opened my eyes to the many, far reaches of the world, as well as the possibilities of growth. Before I was apart of MUN I had seen the world for what it was but never saw myself capable of doing anything about the issues within it, through the MUN experience I built an understanding and knowledge of the world which will live on with me forever. I gained the ability to say "Yes something can be done", and threw our simulations, debating , and creating resolutions, we had proven that very statement because if we can do it, so can the great leaders of the world that much more power then measly little middle school or high school students. The best parts of this experience were the people we meet and the worlds and cultures we were exposed to, I learned to get out of my shell, and interact with individuals that had the same goals and purposes as me, to make a change.

My model united nations experience help me grow, and process, I had learned to push myself and go beyond what is expected because at the end of the day your voice does matter, but will not be heard unless you speak. Speak for the nations that have no voice, speak for the countries at war and in turmoil, speak for the forces of nature that will one day destroy our planet, Speak for the things that matter because everything has a purpose you just need to open your eyes and see, what the world really is. Model United Nations offers you this gift, this Seeing Eye glass into the mysteries and unspeakable travesties that take place in this world. In a world where we must all be united, joint together to combat issues not just for the people but for the future. That is why model United Nations is such a profound and deep experience because we, the future of tomorrow, are fighting for the sake of yesterday.

MUN is a great stepping stone in getting you prepared for the future, I remember my first MUN conference, and I was frightened, scared, and confused. I felt so out of place and did not know what to do. I had a great opportunity now that I look on it, representing Germany, I would have had a great shot at being a key player in the conference, but as me and my partner struggled to get our voice out there, we were not thinking about any awards or recognition, we just wanted to get out of there alive. In some ways we were intimidated by the caliber of students that were there, I could not image even questioning what they said because they articulated their thoughts and positions so thoroughly that I was stunned silent. I took it as a learning experience, since I was so new to the class and didn’t really know how to articulate my position thoroughly enough into a persuasive argument.

Throughout my MUN experience I grew, I grew as a person, a student, and an individual that is a part of my society. I look at it as a great opportunity I became a much better rounded person, articulating my thoughts and positions as thoroughly and precisely as the individuals around me. As I look back at my first MUN conference, in the United Nations building of 2008, to the most recent one in that very building. The MUN conference of 2009, signified my metamorphosis, my evolution as a human being, I was confident and secure in my abilities and felt at ease in my committees and atmosphere. It is kind of strange and peculiar when I look back on it because now I was different changed by the waves of time and grew into a young adult. I was just a child when I started blinded by the mask of what was sugary and sweet in the world, but then unveiled and presented to the gritty truth of it all. The world is not a perfect place but together we can try to make it better and see it perfectly with all its imperfections, and strive for a better planet, and with a better planet we can be better people.
