Committee: United Nations Climate Control Conference
Topic: The road to Copenhagen
Country: Marshall Islands
Delegate: Soraida Medina, Sarah Delvin
School: George Washington High School of International Business and Finance

The changing environment is an issue we cannot ignore; it is something that affects every aspect of our lives. As Norbert Wiener once said “We have modified our environment so radically that we must now modify ourselves to exist in this new environment.” representing the extent to which we have changed the face of our planet. We have as people, as a united community, changed the immaculate beauty that we once admired as a whole. This is why the Republic of the Marshall Islands, firmly stands on stopping this ongoing issue of our changing planet and we are devoted to finding an effective solution and treating the damage that has already been done.

The issue of climate control has had an impact on our country; it is something that we cannot control as a singular body but as a force when united. The Marshall Islands has been affected by climate control, with our rising sea levels, and temperature changes causing typhoons and other natural disaster within our islands. Global warming has caused are waters and land to heat up, igniting a change in the atmosphere and disturbing our way of life. It has not only impacted our environment, but our people, and our culture.

Through the course of the UN we see that there have been many actions that have attempted to solve the problem of climate control. The Republic of the Marshall Islands has tried to solve this issue, and has truly attested our concern through the signing of agreement like the Kyoto protocol, as well as agreements having to do with biodiversity, law of the sea, wetlands, and many more. The international community has been associated with these projects and we must take these solutions and strengthen them by creating higher expectations and goals so that we may maintain our planet’s atmosphere and not disrupt it any more then we have already done.

The Marshall Islands has been a part of associations like Pacific Islands Climate Change Assistance Programme (PICCAP), South Pacific Sea Level and Climate Monitoring Project (SEAFRAME), and Schools of the Pacific Rainfall Climate Experiment (SPaRCE). These programs are aimed at monitoring the water levels, the state of the coral reefs, and the overall status of the atmosphere. We have implemented these programs in our country to monitor the state of our environment and to attempt to gain some further knowledge as to what can be done. We also gain research from these associations and can try to stop the cycle that human beings have created in the deterioration of our planet.

The republic of the Marshall Islands strongly believes in strengthening the programs that already exist, along with researching to find new ways of life. This will benefit us because we will find new forms of creating systems that are aimed at maintaining and conserving our environment. We believe that we must support organizations like Green Peace that can contribute to the fight against global warming and the organization of new innovative methods of progression.

The Republic of the Marshall Islands strongly believes that mankind is capable of change and progress. In this effort we must work together and create a new form a life for all, not will not all benefit the people but the planet itself.

Committee: United Nations Environment Programme
Topic: Conserving Biodiversity during Industrialization
Country: Pakistan
Delegate: Soraida Medina, Lingordi Rocha

“There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed.” ~Mohandas K. Gandhi. Identifying the suffering the planet endures in the quest for economic gain, in this case industrialization. The very conservation of the natural world is of upmost importance to Pakistan. We believe that the issue of conserving biodiversity is one of grand proportions. It is the very reason that our country suffers in many areas, having to do with pollution and the overall status of our environment. We hope to find that the planets well being comes before our own selfish needs.

Biodiversity has to do with the planets and species within the environment and therefore we must find a long term solution to the problem. The nation of Pakistan believes persevering biodiversity can and will have a positive outcome on the world. It will not only benefit us but many others because we are reducing the amount of species that will go extinct as well as the number of resources used by industries that only cause pollution and turmoil to the natural order of things.

In Pakistan we have shown our concern through the creation of institutions and Ecological Industrial Parks, we have advocated new sources of maintaining the environment as well as created revenue, so that developing nations can find new information on the conservation of our planet. The research gained from the awareness can also benefit the world. The knowledge absorbed can also led to better preservation of the planet, by keeping many endangered species in existence, while growing in these industries, therefore conserving the state of the planet.

Pakistan has advocated this type of behavior by signing the “Marine Life Conservation” resolution, which took into consideration the protecting species while technological advancements are taking place. Pakistan has also worked on programs associated with the United Nations, to preserve our depleting rainforest and landscape. We have also shown this through our dedication to the Pakistan Environmental Protection Act (1997), which are involved with the cleaner production program(CCP), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and many other public and private agencies.

Pakistan strongly encourages strengthening the Kyoto Protocol, so that there will not be as many CO2 emission released into the atmosphere during the industrialization process, and there is control over the substances that are distributed in the atmosphere. Strengthen international conservation agreements emphasize the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), as well as international fisheries law (see section on Marine Conservation). This would help in specifying and serving as a guide to help solve the problems with biodiversity, as well as stimulate change for many nation. As well as set restriction on growing industrial industries, so that we may stop the cycle before it starts, and rewarding those industries that do abide by these ideals with aid, international affairs, any means that pertains to their continual fight against the destruction of our planet.

By working with agencies like Self monitoring and reporting tool (SMART) Pakistan believes that this is an effective way to be non invasive, as well to create a method in which countries are in control of their own resources. It is very important that we consider the many nations that suffer from pollution and deforestation while they are going through the industrialization process, since they do not have the means to obtain the most sophisticated or environmentally friendly machinery. Then referring to NGO’s, and setting up specialized programs would be an effect method to secure and stabilize the state of the environment.

With the intension of preserving biodiversity we must unit in an effort to conserve the natural world, with consideration to growing industries. It is of paramount importance that we consider the monitoring of these industries, to obtain and prevent the issues that coincide with biodiversity and industrialization. It is an impending doom, a forlorn catastrophe that we have the chance to prevent. Let us stop the destruction of our planet, for pure greed and wealth, and give way to a cleansed world of both profit and preservation.

Committee: Special, Political, and Decolonization
Topic: Missile Defense Systems
Country: Benin
Delegates: Soraida Medina, Valerine Andujar

In the Uniting for Peace document it states “To maintain international peace and security, and to that end: to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace.” This document was a foundation on which the United Nations was based upon, and has incessantly tried to reach such a goal. As we have seen through the actions of the cold war that missile defenses have threatened that very peace, by endangered the well being of the world.

The democratic republic of Benin believes that missile defense systems are not the true threat to human kind, but those who yield them are. The purpose of these systems is to ensure the safety of our people against foreign threats. We propose that these systems be monitored and regulated, not being used for criminal acts but for research, or even propose that they be destroyed altogether , putting all those funds and resources to better uses. In this sense promoting world peace and security, this would not cause concern of being annihilated.

“In February 2006, the Government of Benin signed a 5-year $308 million Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC) to increase investment and private sector activity in Benin.” This shows how we are trying to grow and be far more involved in international affairs. “Much of the scientific and technical research conducted in Benin is directed toward agriculture”, going towards what is necessary for the survival of our people, it is in a peaceful way of focusing our energy. In Benin we do not even hold these missile systems, much like many other underdeveloped countries, in these types of regions.

The sole purpose of this meeting is to discuss whether missile systems are a threat or merely percussion. Despite the controversial issues that come with this topic, missile defense systems have provided a productive way to insure the safety of a nation, as well as stimulated technological advancements. It has helped the progress in other fields such as medicine, technology, agriculture, and numerous fashions on how to extend and life, and has elevated the quality of life that people have an ability to live by in the modern world.

But never the less the very technology that has provided us with these missiles, to protect and serve our rights as sovereign countries, has also been the cause of countless deaths and destruction of many lives, and the course of history. As we saw in the booming of Pearl Harbor or Hiroshima, these weapons only cause more incentive to be afraid for your life. The very idea that you are not safe in your own country, contradicts the sole purpose of these weapons. So in all if they were not in existence than all the nations of the world could unit, and truly hope to have a peaceful relationship. Not one based on “who has the bigger guns”.

In the creation of the United Nations they search for a way to conserve the fate of the world, in these acts protecting all who inhabit it. In the creation of all of mans innovations, and creation of our species strength, we developed Missile defense systems which threaten our very fate on this planet. Shown throughout history that these mass weapons do not provide a solution of peace, but on of war. This is why we need to use the technology gained from the creation of these systems to better use. Like medicine, agriculture, and the pursuit of global peace, harmony, and prosperity. So that we may attempt to fulfill the goals the UN had intended in their ventures on correcting the errors of this world. Weapons only create death and destruction, not Peace and prosperity.
